How to Choose a Yoga Mat in India - Buying Guide

You should know the level os asanas you can do before hunting on that one desirable mat because some are thick while others are thin. To make the right choice, you will have to know other things as well, like the size, shape, and material of the mat. So, check out our buying guide!

1

Consider Your Level Before Buying a Yoga Mat

Consider Your Level Before Buying a Yoga Mat

How good are you at doing yoga? If you are a beginner or an intermediate who practices basic yoga postures such as Vrikshasana, Tadasana, Pranayama, you would want more comfort to avoid any joint pains, so it's better to look for thicker mats.

Also, thick ones are best if your sitting or laying down duration is a lot as they provide proper cushioning. We recommend you to go for 5 to 8 mm thickness for a more relaxed session. However, one downside is that they are not travel-friendly because of their size, carrying them outdoor would be challenging. This may not be an issue if you are doing yoga at home.

People with advanced level who have already entered the world of intensive yoga such as Ashtanga or Vinyasa, which requires stability while standing, can look for mats that will give a good grip so that you don't slip. It would also be better to get a thinner mat ranging from 1 to 5 mm because they are firm and give a strong hold.

2

Check the Shape and Size

Check the Shape and Size

It is essential to consider the mat's shape and size as you wouldn't want your hands or feet to get dirty, especially when you're performing asanas outdoors. If you're 5 feet 7 inches tall or less, then a standard size 24 inches wide and 68 inches tall would be apt for you.

Various asanas like Virabhadrasana, Anjaneyasana require a lot of coverage and are challenging to perform with a small mat, so if you're taller, go with 74 inches wide 84 inches long mat.

Yoga mats come in different shapes like rectangle, square, oval, and more. If you're doing yoga in a wide space, any shape will work, whereas if you have a confined vertical space, it's better to go with a rectangular one. You can also select the shape according to the asana; for Pranayama, you can go with oval and square because it includes more sitting.

3

Decide the Type of Material You Want

The mat's material can significantly impact your practice of yoga as a poor texture hampering your asanas is the last thing you'd want. Moreover, if the asanas you perform give you a lot of sweat, then it's worth checking the anti-slip feature.

You can also look for a sticky material if your asana requires a lot of movement. So, choose among the following types according to your requirement.

Natural Rubber Mats Are Eco-Friendly

Natural Rubber Mats Are Eco-Friendly

As the name says, these mats are made from natural rubber and are biodegradable, recyclable, and free of chemicals and plastics. These mats are not as sticky, but they'll give you a good grip; hence they are slip-resistant and sweat-proof.

However, this type of material have some drawbacks too; it is hard to clean them, and if a lot of pressure is applied, they might leave a mark.

PVC Mats Are Durable and Easy to Clean

PVC Mats Are Durable and Easy to Clean

PVC stands for Polyvinyl chloride; these mats are from a plastic-based material and, unfortunately, are not environment-friendly. They are not so expensive, but the overall environmental cost is high because they are non-biodegradable

They are very grippy, so yoga practitioners looking for balance might want to have this product. Also, they are lightweight, and you can easily carry them. However, they cannot absorb your sweat, giving you a wet skiddy surface, meaning that they should be avoided by those who do rigorous asanas. Be sure to bring a towel if you choose this mat.

Jute and Cotton Mats Provide a Good Grip

Jute and Cotton Mats Provide a Good Grip

Cotton mats are soft and provide excellent comfort, making them skin-friendly. They can give you a good grip because of their extra thickness and offer plenty of traction against your hands and feet; hence they are suitable for those who want to do headstand or sirasana. They are not as durable as PVC but are environment-friendly.

Jute mats are made from jute fiber; they are also called go-green yoga mats because they are bio-degradable. Like cotton mats, they are also grippy but are not as comfortable as natural rubber or cotton.

TPE and EVA Mats Are Travel-Friendly

TPE and EVA Mats Are Travel-Friendly

TPE mats are a combination of plastic and rubber, and unlike PVC mats, these are recyclable and environment-friendly but are less durable. If you are looking for a portable mat for your yoga classes, you can go for these because they are lightweight. They have an anti-slip texture, so you can do many asanas ranging from the basic ones like Pranayama to advanced like Mayurasana.

EVA stands for ethylene-vinyl acetate; these mats are made from soft EVA foam and are eco-friendly. Compared to TPE, PVC, and natural rubber, these mats are the most reasonable and lightweight. Also, they are odorless, easy-to-fold, and are anti-slippery.

EVA mats are safer and durable than PVC, but they might contain carcinogens. Lastly, it is worth looking for EVA mats that are free from toxic materials like phthalates or silicone.
