① Know the Right Balance Between Screen Size and Resolution

The ideal screen size depends on the distance between you and your screen. The most common screen sizes are 24inch, 27inch and 32inch. Each size has a specific resolution which balances picture quality and value for money.

Get the Preferrable Screen Size

Screen size varies from nominal 24inches to huge 34inches plus. There's no one size fit for all. If you have adequate space on your table and sufficient budget, opt for 27inch panel as it is adequate size and offers ample room for multitasking.

Do make sure your graphic card is capable of handling a higher frame rate of which monitor can take advantage. Example Your monitor supports 240Hz, and your graphic card can only do 120fps, then monitor will run at 120Hz.

④ Choose between IPS, TN, and VA Display Panels

TN (Twisted Nematic) panels are the most common and mass-produced panels. It is widely used for gaming monitors. It is known for its lowest response time and lowers costs. TN panels don't offer great colours and are not fit for photo editing or graphics; they are suitable for competitive gaming. They also don't provide good viewing angles. In the lower budget, TN panels are a dominant choice.

VA (Vertical Alignment) panels fall between IPS and TN panels. They offer much better colours than TN but not better than IPS. VA panels offer excellent contrast ratios than IPS panels, specified in ratios like 1000:1, 3000:1etc.

It means that the brightness of a completely white image is 1000 times (for 1000:1) greater than the brightness of a completely black image. They are ideal for general use and casual to fair gaming, but they are not a preferable choice for competitive gaming.

⑤ Reduce Image Tearing With G-sync or Freesync

Image tearing happens when the graphic card and the monitor are not in sync. The picture in-game starts to break and distorts all the experience with the blurry in-game movement. To solve the issue, different graphic card manufacturers introduced sync modules to provide a smooth and enjoyable gaming experience. With it, the graphic card locks the refresh rate of the monitor by pushing the monitor to its level.

G-sync is a product of Nvidia and Freesync is of AMD. They both require their specific dedicated graphics cards to work. Gaming Monitors come with a particular mention about whether they support either of the two.

Although with recent change Nvidia has made specific AMD Freesync monitors compatible with its G-sync tech. Check your graphic card before buying one of these two tech-laden monitors.

⑥ Response Time Matters for Fast Paced and FPS Gaming

Response time is the time it takes your monitor to shift from one colour to another. It is measured in terms of shifting colours from black to white to black again, in milliseconds. A lower response times equals faster reaction while playing. The time varies between 1ms to 10ms. Response time under 5ms is apt. Some monitors even touch below 1ms.

If you're a competitive gamer or in fast-paced games, response time is a crucial aspect. The faster you're able to reach the better the gameplay. Although almost all new models have under 5ms response time, even IPS panel which is known for higher response time is catching up and is well below 5ms.

So for ones looking for every possible competitive edge, a low refresh rate between 1 and 5 milliseconds is worth buying.

⑦ Check for Certain Ports

One of the crucial aspect to not miss out on is the presence of necessary ports. Specific models are owing to their pricing and feature cutback on ports which can hinder additional attachments and gaming experience.

Look out for HDMI ports, Display Port 1.4, Audio jack 3.5mm and USB Ports. Display port 1.4 is essential to touch higher refresh rates with the graphic card in the system. Display port 1.4 is superior to HDMI in picture quality, and high refresh rate. Presence of USB ports helps in freeing up ports on CPU and attach additional devices directly with the monitor.
