One of the first things you should consider while selecting an eyeshadow palette is what sort of shades would flatter your eye colour. Whether it be dark brown, hazel, amber, green, blue, or grey eyes, we have covered them all. So, check it out!
Despite being complimented by almost all the shades on the colour wheel, brown eyes can look droopy if warmer tones are used on them. One must always try to use cooler tones to highlight the eye.
If one is looking for a smoked out look, avoid using jet black kohl pencils or eyeliners. Instead, brown eyes look great when smoked out with pencils or gel liners in the hues of green, crimson, grey et al.
If one has hazel eyes that are particularly light, they can be lined with a matte black eye shadow or a black liner. This would make the eyes pop instantly. Fall colours like plums and deep reds make the quintessential combination with hazel toned eyes.
I would strongly recommend finishing the look with a deep bottle-green mascara and frosted or glossy lipstick. A little gloss or shimmer in the lips' centre adds oomph and sensuality to the pout when paired with a golden iris.
A jet black eyeliner can instantly make green eyes pop. However, you should stick with warmer neutral liner colours for everyday wear, such as dark brown or navy blue. Because green eyes are warm and often have flecks or undertones of golden or hazel within them.
Eyeliners that have a warmer tint to them complement green eyes best. Green eyes are best complemented by lipsticks with orange, red, crimson, taupe or brown tones.
One would also be amazed to see how well the pink & peach colour families go with grey or blue eyes. Blue or Grey eyes always have a tint of either silver or brown flecks around their irises. I would suggest using silver or rose gold shimmers around the centre of the lid in case the eyes have sparkling silver flecks.
For the crease, I would recommend using deep pinks, plums, wines and mauves in matte textures. Finish off with nude lipsticks or even a gloss in the shades of peach, taupes or pinks.
If you’ve got warmer undertones, warm shades will look great on you, and if you’ve got cool undertones, then cooler shades will look prettier on you. Almost every colour has both warm and cool versions, so choose the ones that match your undertones.
Clothing can also influence your undertones. For example, a pure white shirt would look great on a person with cooler undertones, whereas a person with warm undertones would surely shine better in an off-white shirt.
Sometimes, one may have a neutral undertone which is basically a concoction of both. Some people may realise that they have bluish-green veins, and both silver and gold/rose gold jewellery looks great on them. A person has neutral undertones; clothes of all colours would do similar justice to their look without affecting their overall appearance.
This aspect is all about preference because we all have different styles of makeup that we like. Matte shadows may run the risk of looking flat as they do not have any light-reflecting particles, but they add an air of sophistication to your look; even when the light is reflected, they do not overpower the whole lool. One can say they are more suitable for an office/formal look.
Shimmer shadows, on the other hand, are perfect for more fun looks, and they will definitely make a statement. You can choose to be subtle with pearlescent ones or go all out with glitter ones. As they draw attention very quickly, always double-check that you've applied them properly.
For beginners, I would recommend using a high-quality palette that’s not chalky and easy to blend. The palette must be conclusive and should have both shimmers and mattes to be used as per the occasion and time.
Based on my personal experience, the best brands for eyeshadows are Urban Decay Naked Series, Huda Beauty and Anastasia Beverley Hills. It’s always a good decision to invest in a good palette since it lasts for a very long time.
If you’ve got somewhat strict rules in your office, then we recommend sticking to matte eyeshadows, but if you’ve got a freer workplace, then you should be alright with some shimmer too. Neutral tones are also great for daily use as they complement almost all styles, so you needn’t worry about whether they go with your outfit.
With ample lighting, one doesn’t need to use much shimmer around the eyes. Light shimmers just on the lid's centre coupled with a well-blended matte brown/brick/ash grey shadow on the crease can look elegant.
Precision eyeliners should be avoided during the day. Instead, apply a thin line of kohl or gel eyeliner just on the upper lash line. For a more natural look, take a pencil brush and smudge the kohl or gel eyeliner into the lash line using a brownish shadow. Washable mascaras with a thin wand are preferable for day-makeup looks.
This is especially true for matte shadows, alright if you’re going someplace with significant lighting but become almost negligible in proper lowlight settings such as clubs and bars. Therefore, we recommend sticking to shimmer shadows in such cases, as they’ll make you look gorgeous even after the sun goes down.
A pencil brush is the best tool to go to when trying to achieve smokey eye makeup. Thick strokes of kajal or kohl pencils in different grey, navy blue shades, brown and black, can be used on the upper and lower lash lines.
A dark brown eyeshadow can be used up-till the crease to blend and smooth out the kohl's harsh edges. A lighter brown colour to blend the crease can further create a beautiful transition imperative to every smokey eye look. Waterproof mascaras giving that false lash effect are a must for such looks.
Just make sure if you’re choosing a brighter shade, you balance it out with a neutral lipstick, and if you’re going with something less dramatic, you have the option of wearing more eye-catching lipstick shades; choose the look that fits your outfit the best.
Shimmers in the shades of rose golds, silvers and golds can be used on the lid centre coupled with black or deep brown eyeshadows to create the crease. Gel liners can be used to create winged eye looks, which are perfect for weddings and festivals.
Be sure to highlight the inner corner of the eyes and the area just below the brow bones to make the eyes pop. Using your finger to apply the shimmers on the eyelid yields maximum colour payout. One can also use makeup fixing spray on the application brush for the same.
Additionally, to get your money’s worth, you should think about the palette as a whole, rather than buying it for 2 or 3 shades that you really love. If you only want a few shades, buy them individually, but if you’re buying a palette, choose one where you like at least 70% of the shades and consider how well they work with each other.
Nowadays, many makeup bloggers and makeup artists review an extensive range of products on their YouTube channels. Dipping into one of the review videos on YouTube for a particular product before buying it would be a sensible way to avoid regrets in the future.
Reading customer reviews on multi-brand websites (for example, Sephora) would save a lot of time that goes into selecting the correct products.
A travel kit may not be as extensive as a usual makeup kit. A few basics that you may gather to compile a quick “go-to travel kit “ are a concealer, a compact, a small eyeshadow kit, a mini size face mist or moisturizer kohl pencil & an eyebrow pencil, a lipstick, a lip balm, a mini size mascara, a small pack of wet wipe and a miniature perfume.
The only issue that darker skin tones might have would be the pigmentation of the shadows; not all shadows are pigmented enough, and you might need to apply several swipes of it to achieve a decent level of vibrancy. Other than that, there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from dabbling in colours.
